How To Write An Essay Introduction Paragraph

Writing an essay can sometimes become a difficult task, especially if you get stuck on the opening paragraph. Writing a good opening paragraph is crucial as it sets the standard for the rest of the essay, so if you have trouble writing it you may want to continue reading. This article will show you how to write a good opening paragraph and lay the foundations for a really great essay.

  1. Find the right opening line -
    • The first line of the first paragraph needs to be a strong one. You need something which will grab the reader's attention and make them want to continue reading.
    • Grabbing the reader's attention does not mean using a lot of exclamation marks or bad puns; • you  don't write for the tabloids and if you get a good grade on your essay, you'll never have to.
  2. Explain why you chose your topic -
    • You should always explain why you chose this particular topic and what you hoped to achieve by studying it.
    • There is no need to list the other potential topics you could have written about, you chose this one, making the other ones irrelevant.
  3. Discuss what you are going to do -
    • Your opening paragraph should serve as a brief overview of what the rest of your essay will discuss in detail.
    • You don't need to give away any points or make any arguments here, that can all wait until the main body of the essay.
  4. Discuss how you are going to do it -
    • In a more pedantic paper, this would fall under methodology, but unless you have been specifically asked to include a methodology section, you should be able to include it as part of your introduction.
    • By now your opening paragraph will be getting pretty packed so make sure to keep this short. Too long an opening paragraph may make smaller paragraphs in the body of the essay seem insignificant.
  5. Find the right closing line -
    • Finding the right closing line for your opening paragraph is just as important as finding the right opening line. Like the opening line, it should be sharp, captivating and memorable.
    • A good closing line for your opening paragraph should introduce the rest of the essay and encourage the reader to read on.

So, now that we've got the preliminaries out of the way, let's read on... Oh wait, actually, that's the end of the article.
